Punjab Safe Cities Authority earns international AI certification

The Punjab Safe Cities Authority has secured a major international recognition in artificial intelligence by becoming the first public sector organisation in Pakistan to receive certification for an Artificial Intelligence Management System under the “Digital Punjab” vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

According to officials, the authority obtained the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 Artificial Intelligence Management System certification, placing it among a limited number of public institutions worldwide and in South Asia to achieve the distinction.

A spokesperson stated that the organisation built its AI infrastructure internally without depending on external firms. Twelve AI systems developed by the authority successfully fulfilled international standards related to the artificial intelligence lifecycle.

The certification also recognised the authority as an international-standard developer, integrator, and operator of AI systems connected to a surveillance network of over 24,000 cameras installed across Punjab.

Officials said international auditors from SGS carried out detailed inspections of the Safe City headquarters, operational departments, and AI systems before approving the certification.

During the evaluation, experts declared the authority’s AI governance model, operational framework, and technological systems compliant with global requirements.

The certified technologies include Smart Vision AI, facial recognition systems, automatic number plate recognition, intelligent traffic management, crime analytics, and AI-powered governance monitoring.

The Punjab Safe Cities Authority has also become the only public sector institution in the country to simultaneously hold ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 certifications.

Authorities described the achievement as a major advancement for smart policing and AI governance, adding that Punjab Police now stands among a select group of law enforcement institutions globally with internationally recognised AI standards.
