ISTANBUL – Aston Villa delivered a commanding performance to defeat SC Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final, ending a 30-year wait for major silverware and handing manager Unai Emery a record-extending fifth Europa League title.
Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia, and Morgan Rogers sealed a memorable triumph for Villa in Istanbul as the Premier League side secured their first major trophy since winning the English League Cup in 1996. The victory also marked Villa’s first European title since lifting the European Cup in 1982 following their famous victory over Bayern Munich in the final. Villa controlled the contest with composure and attacking quality, while Freiburg struggled to cope with the English side’s intensity and clinical finishing. Emery’s tactical discipline and experience in European competition were once again on full display as the Spaniard strengthened his reputation as one of the continent’s greatest knockout tournament specialists.
After a tightly contested opening period, Villa broke the deadlock in the 41st minute through a brilliant strike from Tielemans. The Belgian midfielder met Rogers’ floated delivery from a short corner with a superb low volley that flew past Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu. Villa doubled their lead just before halftime when Buendia produced another moment of quality. Given too much space outside the penalty area, the Argentine curled a precise left-footed effort into the far corner to leave Freiburg stunned heading into the break.
The Premier League side effectively sealed the match in the 58th minute as Buendia turned provider, sending a dangerous low cross into the six-yard box for Rogers, who finished smartly at the near post to make it 3-0.
Speaking after the match, Tielemans praised the team’s determination and resilience throughout a demanding campaign. “We put in a top performance and to finish the season with a trophy is amazing,” he said. “We had difficult moments during the season, but everyone kept believing and working hard.” The triumph further enhanced Emery’s remarkable European record.
