On Saturday evening, US Secret Service agents fatally shot a man after he opened fire on officers at a security checkpoint.
The suspect was identified as a 21-year-old Nasire Best from Maryland who had a history of psychiatric conditions.
Donald Trump thanked the Secret Service for their “ swift and professional” action against the armed suspect.
The incident remains under investigation. US media later identified the suspect as Nasire Best, who was known to both the Secret Service and the Metropolitan Police Department.
“Thank you to our great Secret Service and Law Enforcement for the swift and professional action taken this evening against a gunman near the White House,” Trump wrote in a post on social media.
The Secret Service said that Trump was in residence at the White House at the time but “no operations were impacted.”
Nasire Best had previously tried to gain entry to the White House in July 2025, and was arrested near the complex and hospitalized for mental health treatment.
