Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has extended the SIM disown period from 60 days to 365 days in a move aimed at discouraging the frequent transfer or disposal of SIM cards, ARY News reported.
Under the new policy, an active Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) registered against a citizen’s name cannot be removed or transferred for one year. This means ownership of a SIM will remain unchanged for a full 12 months once it is issued through biometric verification.
The PTA has again urged citizens to remain cautious while providing biometric verification for the issuance of SIM cards and avoid allowing others to use their credentials.
Earlier, the telecom regulator also warned mobile users to keep their National Database and Registration Authority Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) valid and updated to prevent their mobile connections from being blocked.
According to the PTA, SIMs registered against expired, cancelled or deceased CNICs are being blocked as part of efforts to strengthen digital security and prevent misuse.
The authority advised citizens to renew their CNICs through NADRA and ensure their information remains updated with mobile operators to avoid service disruption and maintain uninterrupted mobile connectivity across the country.
