Omar Ahmed unveils PAKMMAF contender series to strengthen int’l pathway

LAHORE  –  The Pakistan Mixed Martial Arts Federation (PAKMMAF) has officially launched the PAKMMAF Contender Series, a high-performance competition platform designed to prepare Pakistani fighters for elite international competition.

The initiative is being viewed as another major milestone in Pakistan’s rapidly expanding MMA landscape, which has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years through grassroots development, private investment and increasing international exposure. Speaking to The Nation, Pakistan MMA Federation President Omar Ahmed said the Contender Series was created to address one of the biggest challenges facing local fighters, the lack of consistent, high-level domestic competition. “The biggest issue in Pakistan has never been talent,” Omar said.

“The issue has always been regular exposure to elite competition. Countries that consistently produce world champions have athletes competing under pressure against top opposition throughout the year. The Contender Series is designed to create that environment within Pakistan,” remarked the PAKMMAF president.  The one-day event will feature 12 elite bouts involving some of the country’s leading IMMAF athletes and emerging prospects, many of whom are preparing for future appearances at the IMMAF Asian Championships, IMMAF World Championships and international professional MMA organisations.

Omar stressed that the federation’s vision extends beyond organising another fight card, describing the platform as a crucial developmental bridge between amateur competition and the global stage. “When our athletes compete abroad, they face fighters coming from highly developed MMA systems with professional leagues and constant activity,” he explained. “If Pakistan wants to compete consistently with the world’s best nations, we must raise the standard of domestic competition and athlete preparation.” He added that the federation is focused on building a complete athlete pathway, beginning from local gyms and amateur development programmes and extending towards international championships and professional MMA opportunities. “The Contender Series is where future champions will sharpen themselves before stepping onto the international stage,” he said. Pakistan MMA has emerged as one of the country’s fastest-growing sports movements, driven largely by youth participation, social media engagement and a steadily improving record in international events. Unlike many traditional sporting systems, MMA’s rise in Pakistan has been powered by private-sector support, modern gym culture and international collaboration. “This unique growth model has transformed MMA into far more than just another sport, becoming a complete movement with its own culture, pathways and global opportunities for Pakistani athletes,” he said.

The federation president also acknowledged the support of private stakeholders, particularly ACTIVIT and its CEO Rd. Rizwan Aftab Ahmed, for contributing towards the development of combat sports and helping create meaningful opportunities for young fighters in Pakistan.
